GARDEN & ARTS

8 Cooney Place, Te Puke

Tucked away at the end of a quiet cobbled lane in Te Puke, Farleigh has been one family’s sanctuary since 1994. An Arts and Crafts home designed by Terry Hitchcock and wrapped in a garden like no other, it is the product of a life’s work, known and admired by many.

The street is small and settled, just eight homes built purposefully, one at a time, with very few changes of ownership. There is a great deal to say about how number 8 was built, and for those interested in the detail, the full file sits alongside this. The short version is that it was designed in 1981 by Terry Hitchcock of Cook Hitchcock & Sargisson, one of Auckland’s leading residential practices, and built the following year of things that last: concrete block, cedar shingles, timber joinery, leadlight glass, kauri ceilings and a roof of Marseille terracotta tiles. Meticulously maintained and continuously improved in its earlier years, the house was opened up from 2015, when the kitchen, dining and living rooms were joined and a sunroom under a full glass roof was added, designed and built with the same talent and care.

More than thirty years on, it is a place where seeds have grown into trees, and toddlers into adults who have since returned to share it with children of their own. On long, hot summer days the junctions between inside and outside truly dissolve. The day begins with breakfast and coffee on the front terrace and stretches into long lunches under the grapevines, the scent of orange blossom drifting from the trees in their old wine barrels, and evenings run late in front of the outdoor fire in the private, enclosed courtyard. The paths that join them are lined with clematis, wisteria, roses, daphne and gardenia. And when the occasion calls for it, the house and garden take a hundred or more guests in their stride; birthdays, weddings and celebrations of every kind have felt right here.

The garden is a big part of why. Over three decades it has become a series of rooms. The large flat lawn is a place for games or a marquee, and serves as the foreground to perimeter gardens of established trees underplanted with camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, bulbs and perennials. The kitchen door opens onto herbs and vegetables picked as they are needed, and beyond them are asparagus beds, blueberries, avocados, plums, apricots, guavas, feijoas and persimmons, and more apples, pears and citrus than one household can eat. Beyond all this, the bush of the escarpment frames a rural outlook, fills the garden with birdsong and keeps it entirely private, and yet the shops, schools and parks of Te Puke are a ten-minute walk away.

Opened to guests and visitors for decades, and featured in Garden and Arts festivals and home and garden tours, the garden is always a crowd favourite. The comment heard most often is always the same: we had no idea a property like this was here. Though its quiet confidence needs no validation from passers-by, it has captured and held the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to spend time here.

Set on 1,787 square metres of ridge-top land, a quarter of an hour from the beach and twenty-five minutes from Tauranga, this is a home of permanence, blooming with colour and life and excited for its next chapter. It is a home that wraps around you and looks after you, through every season and every change, a place that supports and inspires you. When you come to view it there is no need to feel any pressure. Simply pause and listen… if this is the one, it will choose you.
